Here is some info from the Divers Alert Network
www.diversalertnetwork.../index.asp
As I understand it as long as the Diabetes is well controlled and your fitness levels are good then it does not appear to be a problem? You may have to get a medical cert to satisfy the dive organisations, I know CFT have a medical officer who you could contact for advice on the organisations stance.

Hey Dave,
I'm sure CFT can confirm this very easily for you. I see you say you're a type 1 diabetic and are returning to diving, has it caused you problems while diving before?

A friend of mine is also type 1, he’s diving for 15+ years without any problems. Some of the dive centres may have a problem with it others not. Keep it under control and stay reasonably fit and everything should be ok.

I'm a diabetic instructor.
I would suggest always record blood glucose before and after every dive. Also record this in you dive log.
Personally I would recommend BM of just over 10.
I was signed off by a diabetes-scuba researcher called Dr Chris Edge a in the UK for the HSE. He informed me that Nitrox has been shown to cause a BM to drop in badly controlled diabetics. Also record a dive profile with BM using air and compare this when using nitrox, so see how your BM behaves.

Hi guys just in relation to Diabetes 2 - My partner has been told by CFT that he cannot dive with this condition even though he is on tablets and everything is controlled through food and diet -- he only uses air and not NITROX -
CFT said that there is a study going on and ill not hold my breath
He is going mad because he is only allowed to snorkel after going out and buying all the equipment and we were hoping to proceed throught diving at the same level and pace but i have now completed trainee status and he has been moved to snorkelling

The study has already been completed and was headed by Dr Chris Edge.
Overall conclusion was well controled diabetics did not have any futher risks over normal divers.
However when the Diabeties was not well controled it did report very low BM's without symptions and Nitrox having a dramtic effect causing sudden drops.

thats interesting cause according to cft its still ongoing and that he cant dive end of -- he is under control and BM doesnt spike or drop and his weight is coming under control also
